COP27: The UN Climate Change Conference

The 27th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP27) takes place from 6 to 18 November in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. The two-week long conference brings together world leaders, government officials, UN representatives, scientific experts, climate activists, mayors, civil society representatives and business leaders to catalyse much-needed climate action, and especially stronger commitments to financing, to deliver on the promises of the Paris Climate Agreement. COP27 is also an important opportunity to highlight Africa’s leadership in tackling climate change and its vision for a just and sustainable future that leaves no one behind.

Women and girls bear the brunt of climate change’s worst impacts, which are already reversing gains in gender equality around the world. They face greater obstacles to climate adaptation, disproportionate economic repercussions, increased unpaid care and domestic work, and heightened risk of violence due to the compounding impacts of the climate crisis.

UN Women is working to ensure women’s and girls’ voices and perspectives are integrated across all UNFCCC workstreams and processes at COP27. We are urging all countries to rapidly scale up implementation of all commitments on gender equality and climate and increase their investments in gender-responsive climate action that prioritizes care for people and the planet.

UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous and Deputy Executive Director Anita Bhatia will be attending COP27 together with Susanne Mikhail, UN Women Regional Director for the Arab StatesChristine Arab, UN Women Country Representative in Egypt, and our COP27 team.
