Indian Ocean Tsunami through the gender lens

September 2008

In 2006, Oxfam America commissioned Ms Chaman Pincha to study and review the process of Gender integration in Post Tsunami Humanitarian response in India. The study offers insights and perspectives that leverage the efforts of humanitarian organizations in addressing gender-based vulnerabilities and needs. The fieldwork in this research is compelling. It demonstrates thoroughness in its coverage of the varied issues present at the grassroots level and penetrates the gender divide. The study brings to the fore many gendered realities that are sure to surprise even the seasoned advocates of the issue. Most importantly the research offers concrete, actionable suggestions and recommendations to humanitarian agencies, to improve gender mainstreaming strategies proactively in their future disaster response and risk reduction work.
