A landslide is the downslope movement of soil, rock and organic materials under the effects of gravity. Landslides can be extremely destructive, especially when failure is large, sudden, and the velocity is rapid.
An analysis on the impact of landslides caused by Tropical Storm in Micronesia revealed that mortality from landslides was higher among women than among men, with child and teen mortality rates up to 10 times higher than the average annual mortality rate from all causes. Another study on a landslide-affected area in Sri Lanka also found that post-landslide displacement led to a loss of economic opportunities for women, and affected the land ownership rights accorded to women.
