Understanding local climate priorities; applying a gender and generation focused planning tool in Tanzania and Zanzibar

Climate change adaptation must be mainstreamed into local government planning in rural settings. Marginalized groups are especially vulnerable to climate change because it affects the natural resources that they rely on. Simple, affordable, and inclusive tools that can identify their climate resilience priorities and unpack unequal power dynamics are needed by local climate practitioners. We share lessons from a project to co-produce a climate resilience planning tool sensitive to the needs of women and young people. Practical findings from case studies with pastoralist communities in Northern Tanzania and producer cooperatives in Zanzibar provide lessons for delivering positive, socially transformative local climate action.
