Making women's voices count in natural disaster programs in East Asia and the Pacific

August 2011

Disaster risk management in East Asia and the Pacific, working paper series no. 24:

This note explores some of the underlying issues that are linked to gender and vulnerability to natural disasters and offers examples of how to address some of these issues in disaster risk management programs.

It presents a number of key issues that World Bank staff and/or Government policy-makers may consider when integrating gender aspects into disaster risk management programs, both for strengthening reconstruction efforts as well as supporting broader social change and economic development, and for build back-better approaches based on the principle that recovery and reconstruction policies will improve disaster preparedness and reduce disaster risk.
