Zimbabwe: Mainstream climate change in development policies

The impacts of climate change-related extreme weather events such as droughts, floods and cyclones, water shortages and food insecurity make Zimbabwean women vulnerable, according to an opinion piece that was published in The Herald.

“While we cannot talk on behalf of other ministries responsible for climate change mitigatory actions, we encourage women to participate in community-based projects that limit its impacts,” said Dr Olivia Muchena, Zimbabwean Minister of Women’s Affairs and Gender Development. She added: “We also promote the growth of drought-resistant crops like sorghum, millets, food processing and preservation among women and communities. The answer is irrigation and appropriate technology-driven food production.”
