A volcano is an opening on the surface of a planet or moon that allows material warmer than its surroundings to escape from its interior. When this material escapes, it causes an eruption.
Main volcanic hazards include lava flows, ash fall (ejected into the atmosphere and transported by wind), volcanic ballistics (fragments of magma and rocks ejected during an explosive eruption), volcanic gases, and aerosols.
Volcano eruptions often cause displacement, which leads to women facing an increased risk of gender-based violence (GBV) due to lack of safe spaces and limited access to health services, in particular access to sexual and reproductive health services.
