The Third Multi-Hazard Early Warning Conference
From Stock take to Scale on Target G: Accelerating the knowledge and practice of MHEWS for risk-informed resilience is a preparatory event of the GP2022.
The MHEWC-III is a preparatory event of the GP2022. It is organized by the International Network for Multi-Hazard Early Warning Systems (IN-MHEWS). The MHEWC-III builds on the progress and achievements of the first two conferences held in 2017 in Cancun, Mexico; and in 2019 in Geneva, Switzerland.
As we approach the mid-point of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, MHEWC-III provides a unique opportunity to review key accomplishments, share skills, experience, and expertise within an active network of early warning practitioners. The Conference will:
- ‘Take stock’ of progress in the implementation of Target G of the Sendai Framework.
- Report on latest trends in MHEWS design, results, and impact and share knowledge, lessons learned, and emerging examples of good practices as captured in the joint UN Words Into Action on MHEWS publication
- Identify gaps and challenges in practice, policy and science to be addressed in future work
- Promote coordination and collaboration among MHEWS stakeholders and identify synergies with other initiatives and partnerships on early warning and action
The International Network for Multi-Hazard Early Warning Systems (IN-MHEWS) was established at the Third United Nations World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (WCDRR) in Sendai, Japan, in 2015 by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), along with other international and national agencies. IN-MHEWS aims to facilitate the sharing of expertise and good practice for multi-hazard early warning systems as a national strategy for disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation, and building resilience.
UN Women supported four sessions within the MHEWS-III:
- Governance & inclusive early warnings, with UNDP, UNDRR, ITU, WFP, UNESCO-IOC, FAO, ANTICIPATION HUB, Water YOUTH NETWORK, NRC, WMO;
- Early warning systems driven by risk information with UNOOSA/UN-SPIDER, CTBTO, JRC, UNDP, UNDRR, WMO.
- In person side event: Gender mainstreaming into the End-to-End Early Warning System for Hydro-Meteorological events
- Converting Gaps and Needs Into a Way Forward
