High-Level Meeting on the Midterm Review of the Sendai Framework

Convened by the President of the General Assembly, the High-Level Meeting of the General Assembly on the Midterm Review of the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 (HLM) will take place from 18-19 May 2023 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The HLM provides a platform for Member States, the United Nations system partners and other stakeholders to reflect on the findings and recommendations of the Midterm Review, to examine context shifts and emerging issues since 2015, and identify course corrections and new initiatives to more effectively address the systemic nature of risk, and realise the outcomes and goals of the Sendai Framework, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Paris Agreement and other agreements, frameworks and conventions.

In conjunction with this event, UN Women will be supporting the following side events:

• Cocktail Reception for the Pacific Delegation, which will serve as a welcome event for the delegates supported from the Pacific;

• Accelerating Action for Gender Responsive Disaster Risk Reduction, which will focus on advancing a more gender-responsive and inclusive implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction; and

• SAMOA and Sendai: Twin Pillars for a Resilient and Productive Future in all Small Island Developing States by harnessing women's leadership, which will focus on ensuring an integrated approach to disaster risk reduction and sustainable development in SIDS.

• Adopting Intersectionality to DRR using Disability as an example - which will focus on examining what intersectionality means in risk-informed decision-making, investment and behaviour.

UNDRR is also organising the Risk Reduction Hub on the margins of this High-Level Meeting which will feature side events and thematic engagements of various formats in order to discuss advancing risk reduction efforts across sectors, regions, and contexts.
