Gender Stakeholder Group and Women’s Major Group: discussion on the outcomes of GP2022

Participants will discuss GPDRR2022 progress on gender equality and women’s empowerment and leadership in disaster risk reduction.

The seventh session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction took place from 25-27 May 2022 in Bali, Indonesia. Preceding the Global Platform, on the 23 and 24 May the Third Multi-Hazard Early Warning Conference and the World Reconstruction Conference were held. The Global Platform brought together over 4,000 participants form a total of 185 countries, with half the panellists and 40 percent of participants women. Active participation of gender stakeholders and women’s organisations in the global platform ensured progress for gender equality and women’s empowerment and leadership in disaster risk reduction.

Across the three conferences there were several strong speakers sharing important messages on the need to strengthen gender-responsive disaster risk reduction as well as good practices and case studies. The outcome documents for all three conferences emphasised the need for stronger understanding of the gender dimensions of risk, for DRR leadership to be more inclusive, and to increase investments to address inequalities that drive disaster risk through gender-responsive and human rights-based approaches.

Furthermore, the Co-Chairs’ summary from the Global Platform the Bali Agenda for Resilience, called for specific targets and timelines to achieve gender balance and a gender action plan to achieve the Sendai Framework. In the context of the ongoing midterm review of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, which aims to take stock of progress, identify emerging issues, uncover context shits and build coherence with other frameworks to better address the systemic nature of risk this webinar aims to share the gender related outcomes from the Global Platform with gender stakeholders, and to strategize next steps.

The webinar is open to all with the target audience gender stakeholders working on disaster risk reduction, resilience building, and related areas. It will take place on July 20th 2022 at 20 July 2022, 08:00 NYC / 12:00 GMT / 19:00 Bangkok.
