Strengthening gender-responsive disaster risk reduction and climate resilience: Asia Pacific Gender Champions and Experts Meeting

This dedicated event brings together gender champions and experts from Asia and Pacific, governments and partners to discuss and strengthen the leadership role and voices of women in DRR processes and decision-making spaces. The event provides a platform to showcase and celebrate the not only results of UN Women’s work through the Women’s Resilience to Disasters and EmPower programmes but also give our partners: women’s organisations and civil society, governments and donors, the opportunity to share and learn from the diverse experiences and transformative practices across the region, and to align on priorities ahead of the APMCDRR 2024.

The meeting will apply the Pacific concept of dialogue, a talanoa, to highlight the contributions of partners, including women’s organisations and government towards inclusive and gender-transformative disaster risk reduction, with emphasis on supporting the implementation of the Sendai Framework Gender Action Plan.

The opening segment of the meeting will dedicate a brief session to feature impact stories from WRD and EmPower programmes.

The event will be structured as an interactive Talanoa session, encouraging open dialogue and exchange of ideas among participants. It will include:

  • Walk through interactive partner led ‘I sea you’ exhibition on WRD
  • Opening session led by UN Women and UNDRR, keynote by Government Minister and opening remarks by Women leader/partners
  • Interactive discussions on women's leadership in DRR and climate change: sharing best practices and strategies and converging on priorities to push for strong gender outcomes in the APMCDRR 2024 outcomes document.
  • Networking

The Gender Champions and Experts meeting will serve as a critical platform for advancing gender-responsive disaster risk reduction in Asia and the Pacific. By bringing together key stakeholders and facilitating meaningful dialogue, the event will contribute to the development of more inclusive and effective DRR strategies in the region, ensuring that no one is left behind in the face of increasing disaster risks.
