3 June, 17:15-18:30, Room 5, Stockholmsmässan or Online

Organisers: UNEP, Global Green Growth Institute, UN Women, and the Green Growth Knowledge Partnership Gender Expert Group

About: Gender must be at the forefront of the regenerative work being done to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic while addressing climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. Gender inequalities, such as weak land rights or reduced access to finance, energy, water and sanitation facilities, make women disproportionally vulnerable to climate change as well as environmental and social hazards. Therefore, mainstreaming gender into the global environmental agenda, particularly in the context of achieving a sustainable and inclusive recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, is essential in the strive for a healthier planet for all. However, dedicated financing for women’s empowerment remains particularly low in the context of the environmental agenda.

With the concept of “Just Transitions” as an entry point, this event aims to explore why gender equality needs to be a central component of global environmental action and to the ambitions of a better post-COVID world. It will spotlight the opportunities and limitations of our current just transition financing tools and models in fulfilling our commitment to combating the three planetary crises and ensuring that the funding gap for disadvantaged groups is closed and that they are socially and economically empowered to fruitfully participate and benefit from the post COVID recovery strategies.
