Population dynamics and climate change

February 2010

This book hopes to contribute to the design and implementation of national policies supporting the well-being of present and future generations by assessing how population dynamics are linked to emissions, vulnerability and resilience to climate change. It contains papers which provide a substantive and methodological guide to the current state of knowledge on issues such as (i) population growth and size and emissions; (ii) population vulnerability and adaptation linked to health, gender disparities and children; (iii) migration and urbanization; and (iv) the data and analytical needs for the next stages of policy-relevant research.

This volume is a product of: an Expert Group Meeting on Population Dynamics and Climate Change organized in June 2009 by UNFPA (the United Nations Population Fund) and IIED (the International Institute of Environment and Development), in collaboration with UN-HABITAT and the Population Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs; and of a broader research, policy and advocacy collaboration between UNFPA and IIED on issues of population and development. It intends to help filling one of the most significant gaps in the global climate-change strategies response to date.
