Core steps to increase quality and quantity of gender-responsive climate finance

September 2021

This is a background paper which formed part of the 66th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW66) Expert Meeting on Achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in the context of climate change, environmental and disaster risk reduction policies and programmes, prepared by Liane Schalatek of Heinrich Böll Stiftung Washington, DC.

This paper focused on addressing two interrelated challenges, and the transparency and accountability shortcomings they both have in common, with the goal to highlight core steps to increase the quantity and quality of gender responsive climate finance by:

  • Increasing the quantity and quality of public climate finance provision as a core gender equality issue; and
  • Improving the gender-responsiveness of multilateral climate funds’ operations.
