The key role of rural women in building resilience to disasters: FAO’s approach
May 2014
This paper emphasizes that women are key to agriculture, food security and building resilience. It asserts that a better understanding of how crises affect women and men differently leads to more effective and better designed interventions, targeting gender-differentiated vulnerabilities. It argues that building more resilient communities and households from the onset of an emergency is crucial, trying to reduce and manage the causes of disasters. It focuses on FAO's approach in addressing women not as "victims of disasters" but mostly as agents of change by strengthening gender-specific capacities.
